The Gateway of the Sun lies 5 km (an hour’s walk) from Machu Picchu. The climb is up a gently sloping, well-preserved stone path that links up with the most southeastern end of the citadel. The trail that links the gateway to Machu Picchu is actually the final stretch of the famous Inca Trail that begins at the Winay Wayna ruins. Due to the strategic location of the gateway, from where one can look out across the Urubamba Valley (there are breath-taking views of the snow-capped peaks that rise above the tropical rainforest) many hikers leave Winay Wayna early to watch the sunrise at Intipunko. The sight of the first light of day gilding over the citadel is unforgettable.
